Two Warranties, One Leak: Why Add-On Solar Arrays Fail the Roof

BIPV solar roof tiles laid across a complete pitched roof above a lake and mountain range

Two winters after a solar array goes onto a roof, a stain appears on the ceiling.

The roofer says the penetrations weren’t sealed. The installer says the tile was already failing. The owner stands in the middle holding two warranties from two companies that won’t call each other.

Nobody in that conversation is wrong about their own scope. That is the problem.

Every bracket on an add-on array is a hole in the waterproofing. Each fixing depends on a sealant bead that hardens in the sun. Rails and panels sit above the tile, so the covering underneath ages out of sight. Heat trapped under a rack has nowhere to escape, and hot cells produce less.

None of that is a module problem. All of it is a roof problem.

The fix is not a better panel. It is starting from the roof: the cell encapsulated inside a stone-coated steel tile, same thickness and interlock as the metal range, so one layer keeps weather out and sends power down. No racking. No extra penetrations. No second trade to blame.

Five things worth writing into the specification, whether you buy from us or anyone else:

  • •  Fire class of the assembly, not the module.
  • •  Uplift test data for the tile and fixing pattern, at the wind zone you actually build in.
  • •  Rapid shutdown, factory or field-installed, and who certifies it.
  • •  Who holds the roof warranty when one product is both weatherproofing and generation.
  • •  Spare tiles and inverter compatibility, agreed before the container ships.

And one thing worth saying plainly: BIPV fits when a roof is already being replaced. It rarely fits as a retrofit onto a roof with ten good years left. Selling it into the wrong roof produces a disappointed first customer and a closed market.
