Cells are encapsulated inside a stone-coated steel tile with the same thickness, interlock and flashing as our metal range, so one layer does both jobs: it keeps weather out and sends power down. Where add-on solar goes wrong
Every bracket is a hole in the roof
An add-on array is anchored through the waterproofing. Each fixing leans on a sealant bead that hardens in the sun — the stain shows up two winters later, after the crew has gone.
The house ends up wearing equipment
Rails and panels sit above the tile, so the roof reads as hardware rather than architecture — and the covering underneath still ages out of sight.
Heat you cannot see costs output
Cells lose efficiency as they warm, and air trapped under a rack has nowhere to escape. The vented tile body keeps the roof structure up to 5°C cooler, protecting yield and the deck below.
Codes moved on, racking did not
Fire class, uplift and rapid-shutdown rules now apply to the roof assembly, not just the module. A BIPV tile is the assembly: A1 body, interlocked uplift resistance, factory-optional RSD.
